“All my life I had been looking for something, and everywhere I turned someone tried to tell me what it was. I accepted their answers too, though they were often in contradiction and even self-contradictory. I was naïve. I was looking for myself and asking everyone except myself questions which I, and only I, could answer. It took me a long time and much painful boomeranging of my expectations to achieve a realization everyone else appears to have been born with: That I am nobody but myself.”-Invisible Man

“I imagine that right now you're feeling a bit like Alice, tumbling down the rabbit hole.”-The Matrix

This course is a collection of images from the last century—novels, plays, films, poetry, music, articles—LITERATURE—materials that meant something to someone at some point and in most cases still do mean many things to many people. The stakes are high, this is not for the faint of heart. We’ll deal with all the big issues: war, death, life, religion, God, love, sex, time, fiction, reality, just to name a few. The beat is hard and the words come fast, a literary rap of sorts, loud, soulful, and sometimes subversive. The thing with rap, though, is that it moves fast, too fast at times, and if you lose the rhythm, it’s hard to catch up. The key is to remember that even if you don’t know every word, you need to hear every word, and then perhaps you can still get the artist’s intended effect, almost in full. It’s not one single word that’s important, but the whole song, the whole rap, the whole picture that says something. So get ready to come every day prepared to think, to be pushed, to battle—there are no off days with this type of literature. In the end, if you give your time to this course, you will leave it more aware, more in touch, smarter even, than most of your peers. To start with, learn how to free your mind.

A story. From Tuesdays with Morrie:

Okay. The story is about a little wave, bobbing along in the ocean, having a grand old time. He’s enjoying the wind and the fresh air—until he notices the other waves in front of him, crashing against the shore.

“My God this is terrible,” the wave says. “Look what’s going to happen to me!”

Then along comes another wave. It sees the first wave, looking grim, and it says to him, “Why do you look so sad?”

The first wave says, “You don’t understand! We’re all going to crash! All of us waves are going to be nothing! Isn’t it terrible?”

The second wave says, “No, you don’t understand. You’re not a wave, you’re part of the ocean.”
